by Rebecca, a true FORK fan
First up, I am not an a cappella fan, but I am totally FORKed. This is probably because they just don’t sound typically a cappella. I first fell in love with the 4 fabulous Finns and their fantastic French sound wizard last September watching their “Pink Noise“ show on German TV. Since then I can’t get enough.
The first song, “Madness” starts simply and builds up to a beautiful wall of sound – much richer than in the original by Muse. Highlight of “Breakthrough” is Kasper’s driving bass line. If you listen carefully you can hear him breathe – a hint of the energy and effort he puts into this song. In “Highway to Hell”, Anna with her angelic voice, proves she can also rock like the best of them and in “Immigrant Song” Mia gets to expertly scream – a lot. “Paradise” is one of my favourite FORK songs. To me it’s as if the harmonies are giving my soul a hug and it makes me feel all gooey and warm inside. But FORK can also do dance songs. “Without You” and “Single Ladies” are both excellently sung my Mia but “4 On the Floor” is the ultimate dance mix and an absolute FORK highlight! There is so much energy and drive in this song, that whatever you are doing, you get the urge to dance.
“Hysteria” is my least favourite track on this album. The song is very well done but it just doesn’t do anything for me. Also this recording of “Hero” unfortunately doesn’t do the song justice at all. There is no hint of Jonte’s and Kasper’s awesome overacting and „over“-singing and Kasper’s extended monologue about the trials and tribulations of being a modern man (which totally makes this song) is also missing.
To get the full FORK experience with all its fun, glamour and humour you have to see them live. Just listening to the CD is definitely not the best way to get to know them!
So go see FORK live, then listen to the CD, smile and remember the very special evening you had!
